Meliá Panama Canal hotel opens

Colón’s largest hotel project will be inaugurated March 1st. It is the Meliá Panama Canal Hotel, Casino & Conference Center.

The Meliá Panama Canal is the first of a series of facilities built to transform the former Panama Canal Zone into an international tourist complex, extending from the province of Colón, on the Atlántic coast, to Fort Amador, on the Pacific.

Royal Decameron heralds new era for tourism

The new Hotel Royal Decameron Costa Blanca in Farallón on Panama’s Pacific coast will open on Dec 21st to begin a new era for tourism on the isthmus.

The 360 room hotel, built in the grounds of the former military base of Rio Hato is planned as a new tourist resort area.

Panama’s “Decameron” grows —new facilities, longer name

The country’s most successful beach resort complex will soon bear a new name: Royal Decameron Beach Resort and Casino. However, the upcoming opening of the facility’s new entertainment center (which obviously added the “and casino” element to the appellation) is not the only change taking place at the resort.

The “Decameron” boasts yet another addition: “Las Esclusas” Convention Center, a facility with capacity for 600 people. Its three main salons, which can also be sub-divided in six, are named after each of the locks of the Panama Canal: Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatún and can be used for any type of private and public event.

A new store has open just in time for early Christmas shopping. Exclusively designed for foreign visitors, Fort Amador Port Duty Free has recently opened its doors to cater, not only to the cruise ship passengers arriving at Fort Amador Cruise Port & Marina, but to every other tourist as well.

Meliá Hotel opens new convention center

The Meliá Panama Canal Hotel recently inaugurated the Hernando de Soto Convention Center, the largest and most modern facility of its kind in the province of Colón. The new center was built with an investment of US$250,000. Featuring state-of-the-art technology, its two conference halls (Portobelo and San Lorenzo), have a combined capacity of 650 people.

Old Panama becomes World Heritage Monument

The ruins of the old city of Panama –the first European settlement of the Pacific coast of the Americas –were recently (or finally) included in UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. The news came just in time for the city’s 484th anniversary, observed August 15.

New casino opens in grand style

A grand party marked the opening of the Marriott Royal Casino, located in the heart of Panama City’s hotel and banking district, adjacent to the Panama Marriott Hotel.

One of the biggest casinos in town, the Royal Casino is a US$10 million investment, featuring 21 game tables, 300 slot machines, a restaurant bar (and a stage for daily music performances), giant TV screens and other amenities.

The new casino also offers a frequent client program entitled “Royal Club”, as well as monthly tournaments, promotions and via satellite betting.

Bern opens chic boutique hotel

Bern Hotels & Resorts is quietly opening a chic new boutique hotel on Balboa Avenue at Calle Uruguay this weekend called Le Meridien. The official launching of the hotel with executives from the world-class brand in attendance will be in late September. Le Meridien is currently in it’s “soft opening” stage, with limited guest occupancy in its 111 rooms.

The "new" Hotel Ladera

On March 26, David Carballeda celebrated the reopening of the Hotel Ladera in Boquete, located on the banks of the Caldera River. The event took place on a gorgeous day with Boquete’s beautiful scenery and perfect climate at their finest – and to top it off, on Mr. Carballeda’s birthday. Many members of the community and government officials attended as the Carballeda family celebrated the reconstruction and renovation of their hotel.

Big new hotel on Calle 50

The Riu Plaza Panama Hotel opened last week. The Spanish chain chose the beginning of Calle 50 as the location for this new $120 million dollar hotel. The large and impressive building has 35 floors, 645 rooms, with many bars and restaurants, but the focus of the hotel is in its 21 different salons for events and conferences.
