Starting Thursday, February 28, the quiet mountain town of Boquete, in the Chiriquí province, will play host to a collection of jazz and blues bands from all over the Americas. From the kickoff jazz parade to the last jam session, the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival will feature top-quality musicians in a weekend of intimate music.
“The amphitheater at Valle Escondido is just such a beautiful setting,” says drummer Caesar Sherrard of Boquete’s Fantasy Jazz Band, referring to the spot where much of the weekend’s action will take place,  “Music can happen wherever the musicians are, but Boquete offers an ideal environment. It’s just gorgeous this time of year, with blue skies and cool weather. Our little town has a lot of character.”
Through Sunday, March 3, jazz and blues musicians will play not just in the amphitheater, but all over town. There is a daytime garden party at the Panamonte Hotel with the Rigoberto Coba Jazz Quartet. Famous blues harpist Bob Corritore will teach local students how to play his instrument in Boquete’s central park.
But the biggest attraction of the festival could very well be the after parties and jam sessions.
“The after parties late at night…the jam sessions…that’s where people from different countries get together, play together, and that’s where the magic really happens,” says Caesar. “This is a very small, but potent festival. You can walk around and meet musicians all over town.”
After party jam sessions will be held at Mike’s Global Grill, The Rock, and Amigos on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, respectively.
Boquete has a vibrant local and expat community and its unique culture makes it a must-see destination in Panama. With great music, famous coffee and delicious food, this weekend will be a good time for all who attend.
