The Club de Golf de Panamá is a storied course and club. It is the only private country club in Panama and is truly the grand dame of golf clubs in Panama and is located in the Cerro Viento area out towards Tocumen Airport (near the Metro Mall). The Club de Golf traces its roots back to the beginning of the game in Panama. Host for the last 10 years to the PGA Tour’s Web.com event, the golf course has undergone a complete renovation of all 18 greens and other much-needed improvements over the past few years to bring it up to true championship form.
Since it is a private club, one is not going to gain entry to the grounds much less play golf unless invited by a member or, alternatively, by participating in periodic events which are opened to the public. If you are an avid golfer or an aficionado of the game, the Panama Golf Club should be tops on your list and you should make an effort to wrangle an invitation to play.
When visiting Panama Golf Club do not fail to take a tour of the hall of fame (Salon de Fama) and look at the historic photos of the famous pro golfers who made their way to play in the Panama Open in the 50s through the 70s — the likes of Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino and many more. Talk with Alberto Gonzalez the long-time local pro who has many fond remembrances of those championships and its colorful characters. For my own part as a young teen spectator, I clearly remember colorful US pro Porky Oliver walking down the fairway drinking a cold Balboa … something you would never see in today’s carefully orchestrated TV pro golf events.
If you are here in February come out to watch some of the best PGA Tour pros in the world tackle Panama golf in the dry season. Over the last few years this championship has seen the likes of Matt Kuchar, Brant Snedeker, Camilo Villegas and many more that have moved on and graduated to the “big tour.”
