Caribbean celebration on a waterfront fairground
Every town in Panama has its annual fair and Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro is no exception. The 51st version of the Fair of the Sea will be held from September 11-15. Playa Istmito is the home of this four day festival that celebrates the island’s fishing traditions. The Fair of the Sea selects a queen every year and this year Jirlenys Garrido has that honor.
The fair holds a market where it is possible to purchase local indigenous crafts such as molas, masks, jewelry and other items. Other stands at the fair sell toys, clothing and just about all the random stuff you can imagine.
Try the local delicacies, such as rondon (fish and coconut stew), fried hojaldres or corn empanadas, sea food, chicken or pork with rice and beans.
Day activities at the Fair of the Sea are fun for the whole family with children’s games, pony rides and exhibits from the Ministry of Agriculture and Smithsonian Institute. During the day local schools perform on stage, as well as Panamanian rock, reggae and calypso bands.
Night activities can get rowdy with cheap drinks and partying till the sun comes up. Carta Vieja Rum has an XZone, a mobile party structure with a stage where anfistes such as Karims, Mr. Fox, Ness, Dj Chiqui, Dubs, Akim, Mr. Saik, and Apache Ness will be performing.
