Walking through Casco Antiguo, one sees many buildings… but what is on the inside. A visit to the Canal House boutique hotel will satisfy your curiosity. It is one of the most picturesque buildings, located on a corner of Avenida A and 5th Street, this building, two stories high, is hard to miss. The building has no sign, only the letters “CH” on the door that is hidden on a side street.
It’s hard to imagine that such a famous hotel by name is so unknown. International press has given quite some coverage to this jewel located in the Casco Antiguo district of Panama. The New York Times, GQ, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal have all recommended the place to their readers.
In the seven years of operation, the hotel has been the home to some pretty famous tenants, including Daniel Craig. Conde Nast guide suggests that travelers “follow in the footsteps of Daniel Craig, who stayed at the Canal House for three months while filming James Bond 007 Quantum of Solace.”
The original tenant of the house, Federico Boyd, also left his legacy changing Panama’s history as one of the country’s founding fathers. The house was built in 1893.
It only has three rooms, which means they are quite busy and reservations must be done in advance. Each of the three rooms has its own unique decor and the whole house makes you feel at home, with preserved cherry hardwood floors and tropical flowers. Antique décor and immaculate taste, plus very personalized attention will make you want to move to the romantic historic quarter of Panama.
Canal House’s staff comes from the Calicanto hospitality program – a community initiative that trains women from the area, giving them the opportunity to break away from poverty. The staff-to-guest ratio is 2:1 and they will be happy to help fulfill any whim you have from tour or restaurant reservations to making coffee just how you like it.
Guests that need to entertain can also take advantage of the common spaces of the boutique hotel. The main floor can host formal dinners of up to fourteen guests and cocktail receptions for up to thirty.
Casco Antiguo today has plenty of boutique hotel options, but Canal House will always be the first, since its opening in 2006.
