Not only for tourists, locals are hopping on to the trend.

Not only for tourists, locals are hopping on to the trend.

When traveling to international destinations like New York or London, tourists enjoy the capability to take a spin around the city in one of the bright red City Sightseeing “hop-on, hop-off” tour buses. This double-decker service has been available in Panama City since early 2012 and now it has become popular with local residents as well. Expats and Panamanians alike are reportedly joining tourists aboard the buses as they provide a reliable method of transportation that at the same time is entertaining and educational.

With vehicular congestion mounting in the capital, and tickets starting at $15 for nationals (residents and Panamanians) and $7 for children, the idea is beginning to catch on. Users may hop on and off at will for periods of 24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the ticket selected with $50 being the highest price for a three-day ticket.

Riders can select between two routes on City Sightseeing Panama that include three major malls, Casco Antiguo, the Causeway, the canal, Panama Viejo, Mi Pueblito and the downtown neighborhoods of Marbella and Bella Vista. The buses pick up passengers at the stops on the hour or every 75 minutes, allowing them to take care of errands, do shopping, and perhaps sneak in a visit to one of the city’s attractive destinations.

On sunny days, most riders opt to sit in the open-air top level. The lower level is enclosed and offers air conditioning. All seats come equipped with headphones delivering information along the route in six different languages.

The buses are also available for private charters according to marketing manager Virginia Vives, who reports that special guests in town currently for the IberoAmerican Summit are riding aboard the buses.
