What to do in El Valle

This post is also available in: Spanish

There are a host of outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the cool mountain climate of El Valle de Antón. Here are a few:

Hike the India Dormida:

El Valle’s most famous mountain tells the legend of an Indian woman who fell in love, was heartbroken and died mourning her loss. The mountain took her shape, gazing up to the heavens. The hike to the top takes about one to two hours depending on physical condition. Gorgeous views abound on top of the second-largest extinct volcano crater of the world. Guided tours from $21.75 per person.

Hot Springs:

Covering ones’s self with volcanic mud helps eliminate dead cells, revitalizes the sanguine irrigation system, eliminates dark spots, reduces acne and removes skin toxins. Adults, children and babies each have their own thermal pool (depths vary) with a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees. Bathe in the thermal pool for a maximum of 45 minutes to help eliminate stress, muscular aches and arthritis. Open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cost: $2.25 for adults and $1 for children under twelve.

Orchid Garden:

A conservation project that includes over 2,000 meters of flora and a green house. Visitors will have the opportunity to see over 100 species of orchids, including some in danger of extinction. The garden has about 800-1,000 orchids in total and a guide will explain about care and reproduction. Open from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Cost: $2.

Snakes! The Serpentarium:

Panama has many varieties of snakes, some poisonous and others quite harmless like the rainbow boa or ball python which are available for photos at this El Valle attraction. A biologist will explain how to differentiate between species, how they eat, habitat, reproduction and answer any questions. Some 64 species are found in the area. Open 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday though Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Cost for adults: nationals $1.75 and foreigners $2.50, children under six $0.75 and over six $1.00.

Canopy Zipline:

Glide through the treetops on four different zip lines leading through the lush rainforest in the mountains around El Valle. One zip passes over the Chorro El Macho, a waterfall. Children over six years permitted and adults with a maximum weight of 220 pounds. Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 30% discount with El Valle promotion.
