Problems related to the spinal column are common and often need surgery. However, advances in modern medicine and the creation of new techniques are offering other alternatives for patients that have being plagued by pain all their lives. Dr Javier Alvarado, a neurosurgeon, is offering treatments in his clinic that do not require hospitalization or long term rehabilitation.
Dr Alvarado, who has a fellowship in Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery and was trained by the internationally renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Merril Reuter, advocates techniques for ambulatory surgery.
Techniques such as neuro-modulation, initially used on patients with Parkinson disease and Alzheimer´s, have proved very effective in the treatment of chronic pain, because it stabilizes the transmitters of the central nervous system, not only alleviating pain, but also improving other conditions such as depression and anxiety which are very common in this type of illness.
Other treatments offered by Dr Alvarado are Laser Endoscopy, an innovative technique which does not require hospitalization that involves an incision so small and manageable that it can be done out-patient.
Dr Alvarado offers consultations about neurosurgery in general, brain surgery, peripheral nerves (carpal tunnel) and pain relief originated by spinal column disorders. His offices are located in Punta Pacifica Hospital.
Alvarado is a member of the North American Spine Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, World Federation of Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery, American Association of Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery and the Panamanian Society of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
