The Mil Polleras parade which was first held in Panama City as a welcoming event to the Miss Universe Pageant participants in 2003, pays homage to the Andalusian inspired Panamanian Pollera, a hand-made gem which, with its jewelry, can cost upwards of $20,000 dollars.

The “Pollera” has a long history that goes back to colonial times, when the black slaves sewed them trying to imitate the wide skirt dresses used by Spanish women.
