People have always tried to find ways to improve their health and wellbeing and spas are part of that pursuit to achieve the perfect balance between body and mind. The Roman and Greek civilizations had baths where men and women received beauty treatments. Centuries later they still exist.
Spa is derived from the name of the town of Spa, Belgium whose name dates back to Roman times, when the location was called Aquae Spadanae. Nowadays, spas are businesses which provide a variety of services for the purpose of improving health, beauty and relaxation through personal care treatments such as massages and facials.
In the past, spas were the domain of the rich and famous, but over the last twenty years they have become more accessible to the general public and now appear all over. One thing is clear, people want to escape from a time-dictated and stressful environment, clear their minds and connect with friends and family. The need for feeling comfortable, pampered and well-looked after in a luxurious environment is very enticing.
There are different types of spas. Those specialized in holistic health, encompassing the mind and spirit, include practices such as yoga and reiki as a way to alleviate common aches and pains, arthritis and even high blood pressure.
Panama is becoming a spa destination with local hotels offering packages which include diet, exercise programs, instruction on wellness, life coaching and yoga. One attraction is that many of them are located close to beaches, in the mountains and even rivers, making the experience even more enjoyable.
It is possible to find spas all over the country from the spa at the Waldorf Astoria in the heart of Panama City to the Westin Playa Bonita twenty minutes from the capital. There are also well equipped spas in the mountains of Chiriqui and the Pacific beaches.
Spas treatments are for everybody, so do not delay. Pamper yourself. After all, you only live once.
