Teatro Amador in Casco Antiguo is celebrating its first year anniversary with a week-long series of events from Tuesday, May 13 to Saturday, May 17. The Tuesday night inaugural event will be Panama’s latest installation of the prestigious TED Talks conference series, the independently organized TEDxPanamaCity. The speakers for the night will expand on the theme “Panama City as a Cultural Innovation Platform.”
The keynote speaker at the event will be Andrés Madrigal, chef and owner of the renowned Spanish restaurant that bears his name. His talk will focus on Casco Antiguo as a center of innovation in Panama. Also speaking will be Stephanie Cohen, organizer of Startup Weekend Panama; Edilberto Trejos, president of the Alliance Francaise and the person behind the San Francisco de la Montaña Festival; and Jahaziel Arrocha, the star saxophonist from the Danilo Perez Foundation and Berklee School of Music.
TEDx events were first held in Panama in 2011 with speakers such as former first lady of the Republic, Vivian Fernández de Torrijos, and the Ph.D. Carmenza Spadafora, sister of the disappeared political activist, Hugo Spadafora. The last TEDxPanamaCity took place in March at the Westin Hotel in Costa del Este.
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a series of conferences held around the world and organized by the not-for-profit Sapling Foundation under the slogan “ideas worth spreading.”
Founded in 1984 as a one-time event, TED became an annual conference in 1990 with an early emphasis on technology and design.
Speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to address a wide array of topics within the research and practice of science and culture. Noteworthy presenters have included Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall and Bill Gates.
The talks are streamed live online through Ted.com. As of this year, over 1700 talks are available for free viewing through the site.
TEDx are independently organized TED-like events which can be organized by people who obtain a free license from TED and agree to abide by certain principles. As of this year, the TEDx talk library contains over 30,000 presentations from over 30 countries. These presentations also include live music performances.
The TEDxPanamaCity conferences have been taking place since 2011 and are organized by Juan Pablo de Gamboa and María Isabel Monsalve.
“The TEDx theme expands on Teatro Amador’s mission as a cultural venue, making it a perfect fit to celebrate our first birthday,” said Jacob Larrinaga, the theater’s marketing director. The celebrations continue with an invite-only party on Wednesday, May 14; a “Late Night Jazz” presentation on Thursday, May 15; a dance concert featuring Adana Twins on Friday, May 16; and the Latin-themed “Bésame Mucho” party on Saturday, May 17.
Tickets to the TEDx conference are $30 and can be purchased by visiting Eventbrite.com. Teatro Amador will be offering promotional discounts through social media and to those who sign up for their mailing list. See Facebook.com/teatroamadorpanama for all the details.
