Panama is making a concerted effort to attract more conventions to the country. The Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) has created a new organization called the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), dedicated to promoting and developing Panama as a destination to organizers of conventions and group events.
The DMO specializes in advising, promoting and responding to the requirements of companies, entities and associations interested in conducting meetings and conventions in Panama. Additionally, they arrange for hotel stays, transportation services and entertainment tours. They also organize Panamanian folkloric presentations and provide souvenirs, all while promoting the different convention centers available in the country.
As a non-profit organization that is working as an alliance between the public and private sector, the DMO’s purpose is to be a one-stop shop for event organizers, providing all the information they might need about Panama in one phone call.
In the first half of 2013 the DMO generated 52 business opportunities for hotels of which 52% selected Panama as an event destination; this could potentially generate around $30 million for the Panamanian economy.
A congress of 100 people who stay for four nights could generate around $200,000 and five of those groups could contribute around $1 million to the economy.
Ernesto Orillac, deputy administrator of the ATP, said that Panama is becoming one of the big players in the convention tourism market in the region. However, it is necessary to keep improving the country’s connectivity and infrastructure to stand up to markets like Cancún, México and Las Vegas in the United States.
