A recycling fair is coming to the school grounds of the Academia Interamericana in Costa del Este on Saturday, May 24 from 1 to 6 p.m. The Yo Reciclo (I Recycle) Fair is free and co-sponsored by Roba Morena, the social activist, the artists coalition, and Juego Limpio Panamá, the anticorruption foundation backed by Transparency International.
The objective of this alliance is to “walk towards a more honest society.” The fair celebrates that walk with music and fun activities for the entire family. While highlighting the pressing need to implement recycling programs in the country, the fair also presents solutions. Debates will be held in which grass-roots action will be discussed and the public is invited to bring in material for recycling. The list of accepted goods includes cans, plastic, cardboard, paper, batteries, newspapers, tetrapak containers, clothes, electronics, vegetable oil, toner and printer ink cartridges. Glass will no longer be accepted due to issues sourcing a glass recycler in the City.
Other activities will include face-painting, an art exhibit, plays and musical performances by Raíces y Cultura, Yomira Jhon and Billy Mata. SembrArte will be painting a mural on site. There will be vendors selling vegetarian and vegan food and handicrafts. Pet adoptions and a blood donation drive will also take place.
The event will be the 40th fair of this nature organized by Roba Morena in the country to date. That represents more than 500,000 pounds of materials recycled, 275 cats and dogs that have found new homes and 203 units of blood that have been collected.
