Rum is the alcohol distilled from sugarcane juice or molasses. The distillate is usually aged in oak barrels and produced in various grades. Light variations are commonly used for mixed drinks while the golden or dark rums are typically consumed straight, used in cooking or consumed with a mixer. Premium rums are also produced and consumed straight or iced. Most rum production is centered in the Caribbean and Latin America.
