Mothers’ Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in most of the countries of Latin America, but in Panama the occasion is marked every year on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception. The first time Mothers’ Day was held in Panama was May 11, 1924, established as national holiday through a decree approved by then President Belisario Porras. The date change was originally proposed by the First Lady of the Republic, Hercilia of Arosemena, with support from influential ladies of society in the year 1930.
