The Bigger Pitch Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which supports the holistic development of children through soccer, recently hosted 200 children and a team of coaches in the highlands of Volcan, Panama in a joint partnership with USA’s Massive Soccer Coaching and Panama’s Janson Family Coffee Farm.

The week long program included free coaching clinics given to children who congregated each day at the Club de Leones, in the heart of the local community. The diverse American, English and Panamanian coalition hosted daytime clinics for players and evening workshops for coaches. The player clinics served to improve soccer skills and inspire the children to continue playing the sport. The coaching workshops served to expand the coaches’ youth training repertoire and bolster organizational skills necessary to create a holistic youth soccer development program in Volcan.

Teams from David, a city located 40 miles to the east, travelled to Volcan as word of the soccer clinics spread throughout the region. The week’s activities culminated in a children’s Futsal Tournament at the Club De Leones that was organized and coordinated by the trainee coaches.

“We were thrilled with the enthusiasm of the participants,” said Foster Frasier, president of Massive Soccer Coaching.

Seven area coaches successfully completed the course and will continue to teach the skills recently acquired to the children of Volcan and surrounding areas. The next player’s clinics will be in June 2015 and will be hosted in Volcan, Bugaba and Panama City.

“The realization that a small, round bag of air, commonly known as a soccer ball, can have such a tremendous impact on both physical and mental well-being, personal motivation, and collective accomplishment was apparent to everyone,” said Karina Fitz, co-founder of The Bigger Pitch. Lara Killgore, another founder, added “Witnessing children from different countries and cultures learning from each other, communicating with each other, and enjoying each other, not through spoken language, but through the common language of soccer and play, was moving to all.”
