Avid sports fisherman, John Gorman, contacted Hennie Marais to start a high-end fishing charter company last year at a time when no other company in the country was doing so. Marais, now General Manager of Panama Yacht & Fishing Charters, explained that “We had a lot of American yacht brokers suggesting we cover the demand for Panama in the international market.” The company now covers Panama’s four archipelagos on a rotating basis. This includes the popular destination of Las Perlas, where they operate from their home base on Pedro Gonzalez Island.
The fleet comprises a 98 foot mothership, a 66 foot sports fishing boat and a 37 foot day sports fishing boat. “At Pedro Gonzalez, we have one of the best marinas in the country,” says Marais, “and we also have an airstrip.” The location is perfect for sports fishing aficionados. “A typical trip may last from four to five days and go from Pedro Gonzalez in Las Perlas, to Piñas Bay then back to Las Perlas,” he added.
Fishing is just part of what they do. Whale watching excursions, scuba diving, and even surfing trips can be arranged. “We have jet skis and all sorts of marine toys,” says Hennie. Snorkel equipment, kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards offer options for all tastes. “We also do evening cruises with cocktails and a high-end dinner.”
The charter company recently became affiliated with the Guy Harvey Outpost brand, a prestigious eco-conscious company dedicated to sustainable travel. Marais also runs Panama’s only professional paddle store, the Paddle Panama Center (PaddlePanama.com).
