For the third consecutive year, the Embera village of Piriatí, located near Lake Bayano in Panama province, will open its door to visitors who want to join them in their “Cultural Day” to be held on Sunday, October 25 from 10 a.m.
The “Cultural Day” is an annual event organized by the Embera community to honor their traditions and customs. The villagers show their body paintings and tell stories about their ancestors. They display dances, music and theater performances and visitors have the opportunity to taste their traditional cuisine, prepared with fruit and forest plants.
This initiative springs from the conscious need of the community to transmit their culture and traditions to new generations, since much of their collective knowledge has been forgotten.
Piriati can be reached from Panama City by taking a bus to Agua Fria from Albrook Bus Terminal, getting off at the stop labeled “Piriati Embera community.” The trip takes 3 hours and buses ply the route from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The fare is $5.
