Amador Convention Center 2018. The Amador Convention Center was planned to boost Panama as a convention destination, but a series of setbacks has delayed this project for several years. Finally the consortium formed by China Construction America CCA and Construcciones Civiles Generales S.A., Cocige has announced that the project will be ready in 24 months, with a new design and creating 200 jobs immediately.
There are plans to hire a company to market the new convention center and attract tourism. Many hotels were built over the last five years in Panama City, attracted by the great possibilities that the convention tourism sector has.
The President of the Republic, Juan Carlos Varela, said that it had been difficult to reactivate, the project due to bad decisions and lack of transparency in its management. “A lot of jobs were lost at the time, but the new consortium has promised to finish the building on time.”
The new convention center will cost $193.7 million with capacity for 25,000 people. It will have special rooms for fairs and exhibitions.
At the end of 2014, the construction of the center was stopped, due to the lack of funds on the part of the consortium HPC-Contrata-P&V, who was responsible for the project. A new tendering process began which lasted almost 18 months. Finally the contract was won by the CCA-COCIGE consortium, which now has the order to finish the project.
The new Amador Center has been redesigned with new technologies, making the building more functional. It will also have bays for loading and unloading next to the exhibition rooms, which in the original blueprints were on the second floor.
It will have a construction area of 58,000 square meters, 30,000 of which can be used for different events. The new convention center will be three times bigger than Atlapa and will employ over 1000 people.
