Bocas del Toro Eco Village. The digital magazine Inhabitat published an article about the first village, whose houses are being constructed entirely with plastic bottles. This environmentally friendly neighborhood is the brainchild of Robert Bezeau and is located in Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro.
There are plans to construct 120 homes on 83 acres of pristine land. Each home will comprise a steel framework full of recycled plastic bottles that are then covered in a concrete mix. The first two-bedroom home recycled a staggering 10,000 plastic bottles. Plastic is a good insulator and the interior of the houses are 17 degrees Celsius cooler than the outside.
Bezeau consulted local architects who designed three different models that have sufficient flexibility to be earthquake-resistant. Each home will be delivered complete with plumbing and electricity, along with standard doors and windows. They can be delivered at a fraction of the time and costs, compared with those built with traditional materials. There are also plans to build a small boutique lodge with a community garden and mini parks.
