Panama Folk Dance Festival. As part of the celebrations for the “World Year of Understanding” The International Council of Folklore and Traditional Arts Festivals (CIOFF) will present the V National Folk Dance Festival at the Balboa Theater with two performances on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, September 18.
The first presentation on Saturday, September 17 will feature the participation of the best 16 groups in the country. Some of these groups are the Panamanian Folkloric Ballet, the group “Ritmos y Raices” and the dance group of the José A. Corella Academy.
During the second presentation of the festival on Sunday, 18, ten children’s and youth groups will take over the stage. These are the next generation that will continue the national folklore traditions. During both days of the festival the public can enjoy traditional dances from provinces like Chiriqui, Colon and the central provinces, plus dances from Chorrera and Panama.
CIOFF is an organization under the umbrella of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which protects these dances as intangible cultural heritage. Its delegation in Panama is led by the Porf. Dania Diaz, who has been a key part in the organization of this festival.
During the festival the public will also be able to appreciate crafts, music and food which are also part of the folklore of Panama. The admission to the adults presentation of the festival will cost $10, while the youth and children presentation will cost $5.
