Great Boquete Soup Fest. The Boquete Knitters and Quilters are hosting “The Great Boquete Soup Fest” on Friday, October 28, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the BCP Event Center across from the Boquete Flower Fairgrounds. For a suggested donation of $10, you can sample and savor 18 different and delicious soups and enjoy a cookie for dessert.
All proceeds go toward the purchase of yarn and quilt fabric and batting with which the members make baby quilts, blankets, sweaters, caps and bootees which they donate to various clinics and hospitals that serve the poorest members of the community.
The Boquete Knitters and Quilters was founded in January 2009 when six members of the ex-pat community met to “knit for the babies”. After moving to their current meeting place, the Fundacion Pro Integracion in Alto Boquete, several Panamanian ladies expressed a desire to learn how to “knit with two needles” and to also knit for the Ngabe-Bugle babies.
They were soon joined by Ngabe-Bugle ladies who were also interested in the ‘new-to-them’ art of knitting. The group remains multi-cultural with women from various countries sitting together with Panamanians and Ngabe-Bugle at the Fundacion Pro Integracion every Friday afternoon between 1p.m. and 3p.m., knitting, crocheting and visiting together.
In the nearly eight years since its inauguration, the Boquete Knitters and Quilters have donated over six thousand items to the Centro de Salud in Boquete, the Palmira Clinica, and the pediatric oncology department and the newborn nursery at the Obaldia Hospital in David, as well as making direct donations to communities in the Comarca affected by seasonal flooding or other disasters.
