The little town of Boquete in the highlands of the Chiriqui has a surprising number of very good restaurants, but if you want healthy food which is flavorsome and just like your mother used to make it, then you should pay a visit to the Garden Restaurant and Country Store, located in San Francisco Plaza, Alto Boquete, next to Morton’s Bakehouse. It opens Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The food served here is momma’s home cooking with American and traditional Panamanian dishes. The special may include other ethnic flavors to make them more interesting. The selections for breakfast and lunch are varied.
The owners decided to open the restaurant because Alto Boquete needed a fresh garden produce stand, and a great spot for breakfast and lunches. They chose to offer a build-your-own baked potato and salad bar, with homemade soups, fresh smoothies and vegetable juices.
Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. If you decide to have breakfast there prepare yourself, because there is so much to choose from you will not know where to start. On offer are beefsteak picada (chopped meat), traditional American breakfasts including eggs toast country potatoes, turkey bacon and sausage (or pork bacon if requested), French toast, biscuits and gravy, special house pancakes, fruit and cheese platters and granola with Greek yogurt topped with fruit.
The options for lunch are just as tasty and bear in mind that this family-run eatery has the best salad bar on this side of the country with 21 plus ingredients to choose from. Depending on your appetite you can ask for Angus or turkey burgers, stuffed baked potatoes, avocado and sprout sandwiches, soups, complete meals with fish or chicken, daily specials including BBQ brisket, pot roast, fryer chicken, taco salad, pizzas.
For dessert you can choose from Ol’ fashioned homemade ice cream, apple pie, strawberry rhubarb pie, donuts, banana bread, cookies and brownies among other delicacies.
The Garden also has a Child’s Menu which gives a great variety of options and makes eating out with young ones very reasonable and exciting in the boat booth. The ‘boat’ is marooned on the beach side of the restaurant and can seat as many as 6 people.
There is a smoothie and expresso bar open until 5:00 p.m. for your afternoon coffee or veggie juice.
The Country Store offers fresh produce and a place for local artisan products. The ‘Beach Side’ has a wall reserved for artists to hang their work to sell, and offers a great space for art exhibitions, and private parties, or meetings.
