Delay tactics

The US Attorney General’s Office responded to the request of the defense lawyers of former President Ricardo Martinelli, who wanted to suspend for thirty days the decision on their client by the State Department. In a brief, which looks more like a teaching recommendation for the defense, Prosecutor Benjamin Greenberg recommends his counterpart to file a habeas corpus and asked him to take note of the steps of the extradition process, including the government’s position regarding what his client requires to challenge the judge’s decision.

Chinese envoy

Recently the government reported that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, will be the first high-level official to visit Panama after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The Chinese Foreign Minister will arrive to the Isthmus on the afternoon of Saturday, September 16 and will be received by the President of the Republic, Juan Carlos Varela, for a private audience held at the Palace of the Herons with his delegation.

Colón airport revival

An agreement of understanding for the international operation of the Enrique A. Jiménez Airport in Colón, specifically for governmental institutions to provide the necessary services for the efficient operation of this terminal, was signed by the Manager of the Colon Free Zone, Manuel Grimaldo, and the Manager of the Tocumen International Airport, SA (AITSA), Carlos Duboy.

The president of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (Apede), Héctor M. Tocumen-Panama City Metro Connection

The trains of Line 2 of the Panama Metro that will arrive at the Tocumen International Airport will also connect the stations between San Miguelito and the Technological University of Panama. The secretary of the Metro said that there are also plans to connect line 2 with the airport to incorporate that terminal to the mass transport system of the capital city.

The Credit Association (APC) and the Panamanian Association of Real Estate Brokers and Promoters (Acobir) signed a cooperation agreement to foster business development based on improved compliance practices, in accordance to national and international regulations, stimulating investment and contributing to better conditions of life of the Panamanian society.

Big concern

The concern of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) for freedom of the press and speech in Panama was the reason for a visit by a delegation of this group to the isthmus. They met with the president of Grupo Editorial El Siglo and La Estrella de Panama (GESE), Eduardo Quirós. The meeting took place due to the situation of the newspapers facing difficulties for their inclusion on the “Clinton List”, since 2016, which means that no U.S. company or citizens from that nation can do business with the GESE group.

A helping hand

The Colón Free Zone (ZLC) located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, which is the largest free trade zone in the hemisphere, agreed to an alliance with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to modernize the institutional framework and promote markets in a transparent manner. UNDP’s resident representative in Panama, Harold Robinson Davis, said that the organization will make available to the CFZ its experience in the management and execution of projects of governance and social interest, as well as knowledge and specialties in the areas of development.

Partial service

The line 2 of the Panama Metro will operate partially for World Youth Day (WYD), to be held in Panama from January 22 to 27, 2019. The secretary of the Panama Metro, Robert Roy, released the information recently. According to Roy, the service by the trains of line 2 will be provided between the Southern Corridor (Tocumen Airport) and San Miguelito stations.

More ships

After surpassing the strong fall of last year, when the inauguration of the expansion of the Panama Canal took place on June 26, 2016, the transit of ships through this important inter-oceanic route has improved so far this year, 2017. This was revealed by a report from the Comptroller’s Office, which indicates that from January to July 2017, the transit of ships through the Canal increased by 5.9%, from 7,711 units in the same period of 2016 to 8,163 units.
