Paying tribute to humble almojabano
Chiriqui province has many delicious dishes, but perhaps one of the favorites is the “almojabano”, a fried corn dough with cheese, shaped like an “S”, which is popular for breakfast. For the last 25 years the Asociacion Folklorica Jose A. Corella has organized the “Festival of the Almojabano with Cheese” and this year it takes place from Thursday 18 to Sunday, January 21.
During the festival there will be performances of national and international folkloric troupes. The popular Samy and Sandra Sandoval will sing their latest “pindin” hits and will be joined by Keny and Kiara. Additionally there will be drum, accordion and “pollera” contests and on Sunday, January 21, at 4:00 p.m. a traditional parade of carts will take place.
The festival’s queen, Her Majesty Yoilis Gutierrez, will welcome visitors to the tiny town of Dolega that lies on route to Boquete and will preside over the festivities.
Professor Jose A. Corella, who is behind the creation of the festival, said that he took inspiration from the Mejorana Festival and decided to save the cultural heritage of Chiriqui in this way.
During the first edition of the fair more than 40 folkloric groups from the region participated in the event, now that number has been surpassed, with dance troupes coming from Central and South America, as well as artisans from the neighboring country of Costa Rica.
Visitors who are going to the Boquete Flower and Coffee Fair should stop in Dolega and enjoy the atmosphere of a country celebration that is very authentic and original.
