Same sex marriage

In Panama equal marriage has been a topic of discussion between government authorities and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities for several years. Various proposals have been made for same sex marriage approval. In 2016 Enrique Jelensky and his partner, Álvaro López, filed lawsuits requesting that article 26 of the family code be declared unconstitutional, because it defines only the union between a man and a woman, and that a paragraph of the code of Private International Law be deleted which prohibits the registration of gay unions abroad.
