SUPERSTAR CAST to star in “Panama the Musical”
Three Canadians living in Panama have written the first musical about Panama in English since Cole Porter wrote “Panama Hattie” in 1940.
Yolanda van der Kolk-Brown and T Rob Brown wrote the book (script) and Tara Van Der Kolk and Yolanda van der Kolk-Brown wrote the songs, working with David Warrack and Dino Nugent, the Music Director.
The story is set in the Panama Canal Zone in 1927. A young American songwriter has dreams of hearing her songs on this new thing called the radio. (Many people do not know that Panama had one of the first radio networks in the world. It was known as PCAN Radio).
The network was created because of the need to communicate with multiple military bases along the canal and with the ships in the waterway, but there was a mountain in the way, so they skipped the signal over the mountains (and recorded and shared those recordings with other military bases) – thus a radio network was created, although it was not referred to as a network – just a clever solution to a unique problem.
Melody, the song writer, falls in love with a Panamanian musician and they win a radio contest, held by a new company called RCA, to record her songs in New York. Her father, a Cuban contractor in the canal, dies, forcing the family to leave the Zone. He leaves them heavily indebted to the local cabaret casino. The vicious owner had forced Papa to sign papers holding the family responsible. The cabaret casino owner threatens Melody that if she leaves for New York, he will force her younger sister to work off the debt in the cabaret. Melody must decide between following her dreams of true love and radio stardom, or stay behind to save her sister – if you want to find out what happens – you have to buy a ticket!: panaticket.com.
