Jazz and blues rhythms will take over the mountain town of Boquete, Chriqui province, from Thursday 22 to Sunday, February 25 when the 12th Annual Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival (BJBF) will gather some of the best jazz musicians in the world for four days of great music in a breathtaking location.
This year the main events are being held at the Boquete Fair Grounds, because in addition to the concerts and jams sessions, there will be art exhibits, stands selling festival memorabilia and a bigger choice of food and drinks, as well as more seating area.
Jazz and blues fans will be impressed with the line-up BJBF has managed to put together for 2018 with musicians such as Spyro Gyra, who have consistently been one of most commercially successful pop-jazz groups of the past 30 years. They combine R&B and elements of pop and Caribbean music with jazz. Maria Rivas who has one of the most versatile voices in Latin America, combines American and Latin Jazz / Blues rhythms.
Another special guest musician is the “Scorpion of Paritilla”, Osvaldo Ayala, the famous Panamanian accordionist, composer and singer, who has penned hits like “Ojos Verdes”, “Los Sentimientos del Alma” and “Por un beso tuyo”. The group Malamanya, a band comprising musicians who share a mutual respect and enthusiasm for traditional rhythms and melodies from Cuba and Latin America, will also perform..
The producer of the festival, Deanna Bogart, will also perform at the BJBF. She is an award-winning, multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the diversity of her genre-free zone. As a bandleader/singer/songwriter/producer/pianist/sax player, Deanna combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a splendid blend she calls “blusion.”
The festival will begin with a garden party from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Finca Lerida. There Maria Rivas, Malamanya and Dwayne Dopsie will offer a concert. The jam sessions are at the Hotel Ladera, after a party at the Boquete Brewing Company.
