Marriage of convenience

The immigration authorities of Panama rejected 40.7% of the residence applications permits by foreigners married to nationals, after detecting that they were arranged unions to facilitate the permanence of the foreigner in the country. Data from the Panama National Immigration Service (SNM) specified that 3,493 people in 2017 applied for a residence permit under the modality of being married to a Panamanian, of which 1,425 (40.7%) were rejected.
