Amador Convention Center will be ready at the end of the year

The new Amador Convention Center, located on the causeway of the same name, should be ready at the end of 2018. According to Gustavo Him, Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) administrator, the works show an advance of 68% and a total of $193.7 million has been invested.

The Consortium CCA-COCIGE S.A. is building the convention center, whose construction stopped for a year after the original contractors, HPC-Contratas-P&V, alleged that it did not have enough liquidity. CCA- COCIGE, S.A. formed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation LTD, CCA Building Panama and Construcciones Civiles Generales, S.A., took over construction works in February 2016.

Him announced that the U.S. company,SMG, will be in charge of the operation, maintenance and marketing of the center. This enterprise will have a contract for five years and is currently working on commercialization strategies in order to attract international events.

The goal in the first year of operation is to bring an average of 100 events divided between corporate congresses, consumption events and meetings etc., which are expected to generate $18.2 million.

CCA-COCIGE engineers explained that the structural works have finished and their efforts are now concentrated on the final stages of the roof installation, windows and the outer facade as well as the installation of the escalators, air condition ducts and units, and elevators.

The Amador Convention Center will have a total construction area of 58,000 square meters of which approximately 30,000 square meters can be rented for all types of events. It will be able to accommodate 20,000 people and will have a main precinct for fairs and exhibitions, a banquet area of 4,000 square meters, meeting rooms of 12,000 square meters, a great central lobby, pre-function areas measuring 12,000 meters and parking for more than 1,700 vehicles and 20 buses.

Armando Rodriguez, president of the Panamanian Hotel Association said that the convention center is a very important link for the hotels in the city, because it will bring a big flow of visitors and will improve hotel occupation, which at the moment is very low.
