Legal Requirements to travel to Panama with exotic animals – If you want to enter Panama with an exotic animal and you do not know the legal procedures, this article is for you.
There are two legal ways to enter with exotic animals, such as birds and reptiles, to Panamanian territory, the first is the Tocumen International Airport and second, the Canoas Pass.
However, if you travel by air, you must request the airline you are using to inform you about the requirements for the transfer as well as the approved and updated safety regulations.
In the same way, you should ask a veterinarian for the “Sanitary Certificate” of the animal, this step is essential. In addition, you must request the Export Authorization issued by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES). These last two documents must be duly authenticated by the Panamanian consulate in their country of origin.
Finally, the pet owner must write a letter of application for entry of the animal, destined to the Director of National Heritage and the Ministry of the Environment, which must contain: name of the species (common or scientific), age and any other information that you consider relevant.
Once these requirements have been completed, the Ministry of the Environment will provide an import authorization, which must be sent to the Department of Agricultural Quarantine of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, at the Tocumen Airport.
The Department of Agricultural Quarantine will provide you with the pet import permit, which must be presented at the airport when your pet arrives and it is them who will determine if it will remain in quarantine. Adult birds should generally remain in isolation for a period of 15 days.
We remind you that if any of these procedures are not fulfilled, the Panamanian authorities have the faculty to ban the entrance of the animals.
