The 8-mile Camino de Cruces Trail takes you through 4,000 hectares of primarily tropical forest that connects the Metropolitan Natural Park and the Soberania National Park.
During the 1849 Gold Rush in California, the activity on the Las Cruces Trail was used by a number of 49ers that were in route to California. Be prepared for uneven, muddy and slippery terrain, getting your shoes wet when crossing little creeks along the way. There are great chances to spot Green iguanas, and Three-toe sloths resting on tree brancnes, White-faced capuchin monkeys, Mantled howler monkeys, Keel-billed toucans, among other wildlife that make this area their home. Also you will admire large tree species such as the silk cotton, cuipo (Cavanillesia platanfolia) nace, jobo and oak (who’s spectacular blossoms in April and May herald the end of the dry season).
Prices based upon a minimum of 4 participants.

CAMINO DE CRUCES TRAIL TOUR. Early morning you will be picked up at the lobby of your hotel by an EcoCircuitos guide for a 45-minute drive to Camino de Cruces (Las Cruces Trail).

This historic stone trail was built by the Spanish in the early years of the colony to join the Old Panama City, located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, with Fort San Lorenzo, by the mouth of the mighty Chagres River on the Caribbean Sea. You will hike a  stretch of the trail (approx. 5 hours) that has been protected within the Soberania National Park. The mostly flat trail takes you through magnificent rainforests teeming with exotic wildlife and historic landmarks. This road served the Spanish well for more than three centuries.

After completing the 9.5 km (6 miles) of road you will reach the ruins of the town of Venta de Cruces, by the Chagres River, where our local Embera guide will be waiting for you to take yo to the community for lunch. In the community you will learn about their traditions and customs and then you will head back to the pier in Gamboa for your return to the Panama City.

Note: This tour leaves at 6:45AM and is a full day adventure that is 8 to 10 hours long. This trail requires good physical condition and will take you through rivers and muddy, slippery, rugged rainforest terrain. It is recommended to bring another set of sandals and clothes in your backpack. You will have to sign a release of responsibility form.
